Volunteers Answer the Call

- Donna Fanny, Coordinator of Volunteer Services

At Future In Sight, volunteers have long been instrumental in our ability to fulfill our mission. As the needs of men, women, children and teens who are blind or visually impaired evolve, there have always been people who say, “Yes.  I can do that. I can help.”  That is as true today in 2021 as it was in 1912 when Emma Coolidge Weston asked for volunteers to help her create New Hampshire Association for the Blind. The need for human connection and support is so important today, as we stay apart so that we can all be together sooner, rather than later.

We currently have some timely opportunities for you to make an impact on the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired through Future In Sight right now:

  • Become a Friendly Caller –  You will get matched with a client (or two) to be a friendly voice and kind listener. Sight loss can be isolating on its own, and when compounded by the isolation related to COVID-19, the telephone is a welcome connector. These calls bring joy to both volunteers and clients. Long lasting friendships are made by being a friendly caller.
  • Join one of our advisory committees – We are always looking for people who want to learn more about Future In Sight. Committee members help plan and implement events and are our voice in your community.
  • Make Survey calls – A survey call is the last step for us to understand how our services meet the needs of our clients. These calls are very important to assure high quality of our services. These calls can be made from your home.
  • Zoom Presenter – your expertise/hobby – Do you have a hobby or expertise that you would like to share? We have many activities presented via zoom and it works well. Clients really enjoy learning new things and participating in these events. Please see events posted on our website to get a sense of what is happening at Future In Sight.

We have some traditional, but modified volunteer opportunities available now, also. We are always looking for people to become volunteer driversTransportation requests have been on-going for essential rides. Essential rides are defined as transportation to medical appointments or grocery shopping. We have updated guidelines for drivers and passengers designed to practice appropriate safety measures so that we can offer essential transportation for clients.

It will be some time still before in-person events will be appropriate for volunteers and clients. Yet, together we can make a big difference today. Please contact us if you have an interest in becoming a volunteer, have questions or comments, or if you have any new and creative ideas that will make a positive impact on those we serve.
