How to protect your eyes indoors and outdoors

You probably have heard that you should protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, but did you know you should protect your eyes indoors as well?  You may not realize the impact from indoor glare when looking at a computer screen, the TV, or even sitting by your favorite window while reading a book. Don’t forget that glare isn’t only in the summertime, it’s often troublesome when light reflects off the snow, water and glass. Reducing the impact from UV rays not only improves visual comfort, but it helps prevent further damage to the eyes and reduces the risk of developing various eye conditions, such as cataracts, macular degeneration and photokeratitis.

UV filters are a type of eyewear that can provide several benefits for people with eye conditions and sensitivities. There are different shields on the market to provide protection from harsh light and blinding glare. Colors range from grey, plum, orange, yellow, amber and even clear. They also come in different blocking levels. These filters provide 100% UV protection for your eyes to reduce glare, but also sharpen color and improve contrast sensitivity. Contrast sensitivity refers to the ability to distinguish between objects of different brightness levels. Many people with low vision struggle with contrast sensitivity, which can make it challenging to perceive details or navigate their surroundings. UV filters can help enhance contrast by reducing the amount of scattered light entering the eyes, thereby improving visual clarity and making it easier to distinguish between objects.

These glasses easily fit over existing glasses or come in a clip-on version. The wrap-around fit-over style provides coverage looking forward along with side and brow protection. Before you order UV filters, you should consult one of Future In Sights occupational therapists to ensure optimal effectiveness and comfort level. You will have the opportunity to try out different filters to determine which is most beneficial for your vision impairment and unique environment.
