Real World Skill-Building Workshop: Inclusive Hike & Blazing Trails *AGES 14-22 & THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS*
September 28 @ 9:45 am - 2:00 pm
Join us for the next workshop in our Real-World Skill Building Series which will consist of two simultaneous tracks; one for students who are blind and visually impaired ages 14-22 and one for parents and caregivers.
This workshop will be held in-person in Manchester, NH.
YOUTH TRACK: Inclusive Hike & Blazing Trails: A college, employment and volunteer expedition
From the trailhead (starting point) of discovery to the backpack (the gear that is needed), the pathway decision to take with any switchbacks (options to assist during the difficult journey); this World Skill Building day will focus on what’s next for students, career building and employment. Through the expertise of a career counselor, students will engage in hands on improv games, instruction and tools to address the best pathways for their futures. We also welcome a panel of enrolled college students, as well as employed young adults in their 20’s and 30’s who are blind and visually impaired employed successfully in a variety of positions, some working right out of high school and others after graduating from college, who will share and answer questions from the students.
*We’ll complete the day’s journey, as we all gather for an accessible group nature trail walk and picnic style box lunch (provided), led by our own Randy Pierce, President and CEO of Future In Sight.
ADULT TRACK: Panel and Pathways: What’s Next?
This workshop for parents and caregivers of blind and visually impaired transition-age youth will begin with a panel of blind and visually impaired students currently attending college, as well as successfully employed adults with vision loss. Many journeys toward independence will be represented; some working and/or volunteering right out of high school and others employed after college in their 20’s and 30’s. Questions from your own unique perspectives are welcome, as panelists will share about their variety of different college and work experiences, challenges, strategies and accomplishments. Next you will have the benefit of a presentation by professionals regarding paths to postsecondary education and training options and/or moving right into employment/volunteer opportunities.
