October 15, 2014 – Several agencies of and for the blind were in attendance today at the NH Statehouse. Governor Maggie Hassan, in front of a crowd, read her proclamation declaring October 2014 White Cane and Dog Guide Users Awareness Month.
A special performance of Lean on Me by Christopher Duffley and Gabby Geraghty was certainly a highlight of the morning’s events. More importantly was the recognition of these two unique symbols of blindness and the importance of the independence it provides to those NH residents living with low vision or blindness.
Nationally, President Barack Obama proclaimed October 15, 2014 as Blind Amercian Equality Day. Calling upon public officials, business and community leaders, educators, librarians and Americans across the county to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs. This was certainly done with great fanfare at the NH Statehouse this morning.
The New Hampshire Association for the Blind is committed to being the primary organization where individuals, caregivers, family and the medical community can learn more about the wide range of services, information and resources that are available throughout the state.
